Linseed Oil Paint for Metal Applications
Iron Oxide Minium Linseed Oil Paint is the ideal primer and top-coat for exterior metal surfaces. Protect and preserve metal surfaces with time-tested, breathable Linseed Oil Paint. For specialty applications and/or high-heat exposed metal surfaces use Graphite Grey Linseed Oil Paint.

Applications Include:
- Architectural features
- Fencing
- Automobile undercoating and vehicle parts
- Bridges
- Industrial applications
- Metal windows
- Farm implements
How-it-Works:
For exterior metal, the Iron Oxide Minium Linseed Oil Paint is formulated with a special Spanish pigment called hematite which creates a fish scale-like pattern on the surface that protects against material degradation. It effectively keeps moisture from deteriorating the metal over time and is an excellent alternative to modern coatings that crack, peel, flake, and are often very toxic.
Note: Purified Linseed Oil is a natural rust inhibitor so consequently any Ottosson Linseed Oil Paint can be applied as a top-coat. Iron Oxide Minium Linseed Oil Paint is not needed for interior applications.
Benefits:
- A breathable coating that preserves metal and does not trap moisture.
- Does not fail (i.e. crack and peel) like many modern metal coating products.
- Easy maintenance.
- Non-toxic. Safe to work with, live with, and safe for the environment.
- Long tradition before power-coating and other petrochemical-based metal coating products.
Application Suggestions:
Step 1 - Clean-off and prep surface. Remove as much rust with
a wire brush as possible. Clean surface if needed to remove dust,
dirt, and organic growth. Rinse well and let dry fully.
Best when applied to a bare metal surface but can be applied on-top of a previous coating. For a very smooth finish, sandblasting to remove old coatings is one way to prep a surface before painting with Linseed Oil Paint. Surface does not need to be 100% rust free before application. Be aware that if the old coating underneath the Linseed Oil Paint is failing or fails in the future, it will of course take the Linseed Oil Paint with it when it peels, cracks, etc.
Step
2 - Apply Iron
Oxide Minium Linseed Oil Paint. Wipe on with a clean cloth or
use a stiff bristle brush. Apply 1-2 thin even coats on clean, dry
exterior metal surfaces. Let dry fully between coats.
Can be sprayed with an airless sprayer but a significant portion of the product is lost as soon as it becomes airborne. This is not the most economical way to apply Linseed Oil Paint and is significantly more difficult to achieve thin, even coats.
Note: Iron Oxide Minium Primer is not necessary for interior metal surfaces. Any Linseed Oil Paint color may be used for interior applications.
Step
3 - Apply top-coat. Any Linseed
Oil Paint color may be applied. Finish with 2 coats of your
final top coat color. 3 coats is ideal for long-lasting protection.
Do not mix with petrochemical products or use with conventional
linseed oil.
Step 4 - Clean-up with Linseed Oil Soap. No solvents required.
Maintenance: Maintain by cleaning surfaces with
Linseed Oil Soap or a non-petrochemical
liquid soap. Rinse well and let dry before
application of a maintenance coat of Purified
Linseed Oil or a coat of your preferred Linseed Oil Paint top-coat
color.

Specialty Metal Applications
Graphite
#LFGRA192
Ottosson Graphite Grey is used for both specialty exterior metal applications and high-heat exposed metal surfaces. The same graphite used in your reliable No. 2 pencil, it is a very traditional coating for demanding exterior metal surfaces, such as roofs, gutters, farming equipment, etc.
For such applications, apply Graphite as a top-coat after the Iron Oxide Minium "primer."
It can also be used as a stove-blacking for metal exposed to high-heat such as cast iron stoves for example. No primer is used in this case. Apply the graphite directly onto metal and let dry fully before exposing to heat.
Note: Graphite Grey should not be applied on high-traffic areas or surfaces that will be touched or sat upon as it can easily leave marks or rub off.
It is not a typical Linseed Oil Paint and meant only for specialty applications.
